Spanish Blackjack
The popular version of blackjack referred to as Spanish Blackjack or Spanish 21 is considered to be one of the games with the most favorable rules for players.
This entertaining variation of blackjack features the opportunity to get massive payouts on hands that total 21, do things like Hitting or Doubling after splitting Aces plus a very unique option called “Double-Down Rescue”.
Understanding the Rules of Spanish 21
The most remarkable difference about this variant is that all 10s and Face cards have been removed from the decks. This is known as a “Spanish deck” which has only 48 cards instead of 52.
The effect of removing all 10 value cards from the deck is that there is no way to draw a natural blackjack, which surely favors the dealer’s odds.
To make the game still attractive for the player, Spanish Blackjack has some very unique game rules that benefit the player, for instance, when players form a 21-point hand using between five and seven cards, their bet will payout at as much as 50:1.
So there are two positive things about not having Ten value cards. On the one hand, youre far more likely to build a 21-hand using 5-7 cards and get attractive payouts on your bet. On the other, the odds of going Bust are much lower.
As with almost any other variant of blackjack, the number of decks used can vary from casino to casino but Spanish 21 is typically played using 6 or 8 decks of cards but bear in mind that the lower the number of decks, the lower the casinos advantage.
In Spanish Blackjack, the player is allowed to Split and re-Split hands, even after splitting Aces. It is also possible to Hit/Double-Down after splitting including after splitting Aces and Doubling Down is not restricted to any specific hand values.
Theres is also the option for Late Surrender even after Doubling-Down. If the player chooses to Surrender after Doubling Down, the amount of the original bet is reimbursed.
Keep in mind that in Spanish 21 the dealer must Hit on 17s. This means that the house has an increased advantage of 0.22%.
How to Get Higher Payouts
A player’s 21 will always beat the dealer’s blackjack hand but blackjack hands payout at a different rates depending on how the hand is made up.
For instance, if you build a 21-point hand with 5 cards, your bet will return at 3:2 – like natural blackjacks. The same hand using 6 cards will payout at 2:1 and any 21 hands created using 7+ cards will payout at 3:1.
There are specific card combinations that offer similar payouts. For example when you create a hand thats 21 in value using 6,7 and 8 or using three sevens of mixed suits, this will payout at 3:2. When you create this hand with cards of the same suit, the payout is 2:1 and if its created using Spades, theres a 3:1 payout on your stake.
Lastly, a suited hand of triple 7′s when the dealer’s up card is also a 7 will return your bet at a massive 50:1.
As you can see, Spanish Blackjack is indeed an exceptional and entertaining game of blackjack that features attractive payouts and favorable game rules. Whats truly unique about this popular blackjack game is that players dont need to place an additional side bet in order to qualify for increased payouts.
